Read These![]() As a reviewer and critic and lifelong book addict, I'm always reading. So I'd like to list some books I hope you'll find of interest, if not fall passionately in love with. Diane Ackmerman. The Zookeeper's Wife. A beautiful and unusual work of history and reclamation by one of our most lyrical, creative, and soulful writers. See my review in the Los Angeles Times (September 2, 2007). I suggest reading anything and everything by Chris Abani. A Nigerian writer of tremendous heart and intellect, he is both novelist and poet. His newest novel is Song for Night. See my review on bookslut.com. Junot Diaz's amazingly powerful novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Watch for an interview with Junot Diaz, who is as warm as he is incisive and dynamic, on Open Books Radio: www.openbooksradio.org. George Saunders, the source of smart and edgy satire. Read his short story collection, In Persuasion Nation, his dead-on novella, The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil, and his essay collection, The Braindead Megaphone. Saunders is everywhere these days. Watch for an in-depth interview on Open Books Radio. (www.openbooksradio.org) Kate Christensen's delectable novel, The Great Man. See my review in the Chicago Tribune, Sept. 22, 2007. For more book recommendations and literary musings, see my blog, Under Cover, at www.openbooksradio.org. |
